India At London Olympics

India at London Olympics goes with 73 competitors in 12 sports as of now as compared to 57 in 13 sports in 2008. This cannot be called a big achievement though. A country with a population of  1.2 billion sending just 73 for the global event is not justice to the talent it has. India has always had the capabilitly to produce greats in various sports. Sachin Tendulkar and many others in cricket, Major Dhyan Chand "Wizard", Roop Singh and the greats of a gone era in hockey, Viswanathan Anand in chess, Leander Paes in lawn tennis, Prakash Padukone and Pulella Gopichand in badminton to name a few.

Then where is the fault? When a country can produce sportsmen of this quality where do we lack. When we see the governance behind the sports we find that cricket is an exception to other sports from the fact that it is not directly run by government and the only sport which has remained evergreen in India at the international level seems to be cricket. This opens some windows where we can question the government. Where have the other sports been for such a long time?

China goes with 317 competitors in 20 sports as of now. Argentina goes with 140 in 21, Brazil with 256 in 26, Kazakhstan with 92 in 14 and South Africa with 143 in 16 sports when we look at some of the other developing countries.

Undoubtedly the world owes a lot to India when it comes to producing greats and the greatest; its high time now the lion of Indian sporting talent arises again. Talent needs exposure and support and indisputably I see India at exalted levels in near years if the sporting ministry reconsiders it policies and give the much needed exposure to the Indian sportspersons lurking to perform.
